1914 Herreshoff Buzzards Bay 25, US $200,000, Round Pond Maine, USA

DESCRIPTION
A key piece of Herreshoff history and a stunning boat to sail, VITESSA is an original Buzzard Bay 25. From 2000-2001, VITESSA received a significant rebuild including all frames, hull fastenings, keel bolts, deck, house top, and cockpit combings. VITESSA’s rig was modified and the boat now sails as a yawl making it an ideal daysailer and classic racer. The craftsmanship was superb, the quality peerless, and she has been well-maintained since. The current owners have provided VITESSA with exemplary annual maintenance and the boat hangs off their home in Round Pond each summer. One of only three remaining, her new owner will be a beautiful standout on the water!

Not only is she stunning to look at with the refined sheer and hollow bow, but she embodies every bit of the engineering genius NGH was famous for. The BB25 is quite fast, and they have always done well in sailing regattas. BB25s are known as a “compromise sloop,” meaning it has both a ballast keel and centerboard to accommodate shoal water. It is one of the largest open cockpit boats built by HMCo.

THE HISTORY
In 1914 the Beverly Yacht Club commissioned Nat Herreshoff to design a gaff-rigged sloop for inshore racing, and the Buzzards Bay 25 was conceived. That spring five BB25s were launched – MINK, VITESSA, BAGATELLEA, WHITE CAP and TARANTULA. Today, VITESSA, MINK, AND BAGATELLEA remain active. TARANTULA disappeared before 1920 and is presumed lost, and WHITE CAP (last named ARIA) was donated to the Herreshoff Museum in 1992.
