23 ft 1962 Herreshoff Marlin, US$19,990, Bristol, RI, USA

TRINITY DESCRIPTION

TRINITY (formerly Go Dog Go!) has had a wonderful refit, with the combined knowledge of the owner (World Class Racer), and Designer Ezra Smith have combined to create a lovely looking, practical layout and race-winning pedigree. Whether you want to race or simply day sail, this boat has been brought up to date with modern amenities and new hardward and gear. This is the larger 23' version of the Herreshoff designed FISH and 12 1/2  designs but with a cabin and different rig.  A smaller version was originally built of wood by Herreshoff Manufacturing Company.  The design was then acquired by Cape Cod Shipbuilding where it was built of fiberglass with some modifications at the direction of Sydney Herreshoff. There were two versions of this boat built as a Daysailer (long cockpit, short cabin) and Overnighter (long cabin, short cockpit).  TRINITY’s daysailor design is the more desirable version as it is lighter, sails better and has much better sail handling.

REFIT

TRINITY’s refit was led by designer Ezra Smith, with a major deck modification in 2013/2014.  The goal was to unlock the aesthetic and performance potential of the venerable, but somewhat homely, Cape Cod Marlin.  The hull is classic Herreshoff, based on Captain Nat's Fish Class, modified by his son Sidney and built with a nearly indestructible solid FRP laminate by Cape Cod Shipbuilding. They cut off the "Bubble" cuddy cabin and designed an appropriate replacement taking cues from the Fish, Buzzards Bay 25, and Nat's original Marlin design, which was built from a laminate of marine plywood and FRP, with 1/4" solid mahogany cladding on the house sides. Once the aesthetics were addressed, they turned to optimizing the performance of this very good hull by drawing on the owner’s and designer’s combined experience racing dinghies and keel boats on the national and world level.  Running rigging was simplified and friction removed throughout all systems for effortless sail handling, whether racing around the bouys or simply going out for a day sail. The bottom was faired (by Guck Inc.), soda blasted and finished 5 coats of inter-protect. Also soda blasted and recoated with inter-protect was the new cabin house, deck, cockpit and inside the cabin.
