1927 Herreshoff S-Class | Newport, RI | $ TBD
The Herreshoff S-Class is highly regarded as one of the most beautiful one-designs, an instantly recognizable classic with its spoon bow, Herreshoff cabin trunk, and sharply curved mast. The S-Class is incredibly fun to sail in all conditions. In light air the tall rig will power an S-Class right past any modern boat and in heavy air, the high ballast ratio keeps the boat stable. The deep cockpit remains comfortable while the bendy mast automatically depowers the main by spilling air. Such is the reason that after a century, more than half of the original 96 S-Class boats are still sailing and racing.
VOLANTE is hull number #1019, built by Herreshoff in 1927. Her original name was Fandec and she raced at Beverly, MA with sail #22. In 1935, she changed owners and was renamed Volante, racing at Marblehead, MA (Eastern Yacht Club). In 1943, she went to Narragansett Bay, but the sail number was changed to #28. Dr. Arthur B. Cuddy bought her in 1949 and changed her name to Micmac, sailing her out of Cranston, RI. In 1989, she was sold to Jeff Orum and relocated to Larchmont, NY, where she was restored. The restoration included splining of the planks, making her a very strong and stiff boat with very little leakage. Her name was changed back to Volante.
The current owner purchased her from Jeff Orum in November 2007 and brought her to Quissett, MA. Over the winter of 2007-08, Dutch Marina Yard worked to bring her to excellent condition, and she has been maintained each year since by Quissett Harbor Boatyard. In 2013, a new mast was built by Jim Titus in Newport, RI. Jib boom, spinnaker pole and shrouds have also been replaced. The topsides were awl-gripped, providing a perfectly smooth look with no seams and little leakage. The topsides are varnished teak. She has Harken travellers and some Herreshoff tackle. Recent work handled by Baltic Boat Yard between 2023-2025. Includes a completely new house and beautiful one-piece teak coamings. History of maintenance during the current owner’s tenure is available upon request.
