ALERION HISTORY
On a visit to the Rumery Boatyard in Biddeford, Maine, the owners spoke with the builder and were informed that Rumery built only 17 of these in the ‘90s and early 2000s. The hull design they used copied the 30 or so West System epoxy composite boats built by Sanford Boats in Nantucket in the ‘70s and ‘80s. The Sanford boats are beautifully built and quite expensive.
Rumery decided instead to build their boats using fiberglass with vinylester resin, using a solid layup below the waterline and Divinicell foam above the water line and decks to reduce weight and alleviate any downstream moisture issues. They used the cutaway keel/rudder design modification that Alfie Sanford created. NOTE: the Rumery and Sanford boats are different and much closer to the original Nat Herreshoff 1912 design than the boats built in Newport (Halsey Herreshoff).
The original boat sailed by Nat Herreshoff is still at Mystic Seaport.
This Rumery Boat Yard-built Herreshoff Alerion is indeed rare and should be included in the excellent company of others built over the years.
